How do I build a Flow Map?

Add a Flow Map to your exercise by clicking the (+) icon.

Select the Flow Map.

Double-click inside the first stage box to enter text.

Each stage box is divided into four landing zones, initially.

  • Releasing the Idea Generator on the top right landing zone adds a stage after the current stage.
  • Releasing the Idea Generator on the top left landing zone adds a stage before the current one.
  • Releasing the Idea Generator on the bottom, right landing zone adds a Substage.

  • After adding the first Substage, there will only be one landing zone (substage) on the bottom of any Stage nodes that are added to the Map.

  • NOTE: Releasing the Idea Generator on the bottom, left landing zone adds a Detail and sets you on the path to building a Flow Map for Write from the Beginning and Beyond (see below).
  • Repeat the above steps to build your Flow Map.

How do I build a Flow Map for Write from the Beginning and Beyond?

Write from the Beginning…and Beyond builds on the power of Thinking Maps to establish a school-wide focus on effective writing across all grade levels and content areas. This developmental, vertically aligned K-8 writing curriculum is rigorous enough to serve as the backbone of instruction for an entire district.

This Flow Map uses Details and transition words instead of Substages to create a clear structure for writing in any domain. It is used for writing instruction in Write from the Beginning…and Beyond.
